Any future for the two is destroyed, however, when a great fire sweeps through Hinckley and forces Ilse to flee north with Rune’s daughter and four orphans. Her joy at later finding Rune alive turns to despair when she discovers he has lost his memory and plans to marry another. Ilse believes Rune is lost to her, and in order to ensure the survival of the five children in her care, she agrees to marry a man she does not love. Only by holding onto hope and fighting for a love across miles can Ilse realize a future which she never dreamed possible.
